Sexual Addiction and Couples - Part 2 Advanced Course

Presenter: Paula Hall

Location: Lesbian & Gay Foundation, Number 5, Richmond Street, Manchester. M1 3HF

Dates: Wednesday 15th February 2012, 10am - 4pm

Course Description

An estimated 6% of the population are sexually addicted and many counsellors are seeing a growing number of clients presenting with this issue.  This training day assumes counsellors have already done sex addiction awareness training and are able to recognise addiction and refer to appropriate recovery services.  This day will give counsellors the skills to focus on the couple relationship and help clients move on from disclosure to healing their relationship whether or not they decide to separate.  It includes practical strategies for building commitment to individual as well as couple recovery whilst avoiding the common pitfalls that can fuel relapse.

Aims and Objectives

  • To understand the impact of sexual addiction on the couple relationship

  • To identify the therapeutic needs of the addict, the partner and the couple and develop a contract with the couple to focus on the relationship needs

  • To move clients from focussing on the survival of the relationship to focussing on the journey to reaching a decision

  • To help counsellors manage disclosure therapeutically

  • To identify and recognise risks to relapse and co-dependency

  • To provide tools and therapeutic strategies to support relationship recovery

  • To provide tools and therapeutic interventions to support healthy couple separation

Outcomes

Attendees will have a thorough understanding of the impact of sex addiction on couples and therapeutic strategies to work with the relationship issues that arise whilst ensuring the work won’t increase the risk of relapse or co-dependency.
