Course Description
An estimated 6% of the population are sexually addicted
and many counsellors are seeing a growing number of clients
presenting with this issue. This training day assumes
counsellors have already done sex addiction awareness training and
are able to recognise addiction and refer to appropriate recovery
services. This day will give counsellors the skills to focus
on the couple relationship and help clients move on from disclosure
to healing their relationship whether or not they decide to
separate. It includes practical strategies for building
commitment to individual as well as couple recovery whilst avoiding
the common pitfalls that can fuel relapse.
Aims and Objectives

To understand the impact of sexual addiction on the couple
relationship

To identify the therapeutic needs of the addict, the partner and
the couple and develop a contract with the couple to focus on the
relationship needs

To move clients from focussing on the survival of the
relationship to focussing on the journey to reaching a decision

To help counsellors manage disclosure therapeutically
-
To identify and recognise risks to relapse and
co-dependency
-
To provide tools and therapeutic strategies to support
relationship recovery

To provide tools and therapeutic interventions to support
healthy couple separation
Outcomes
Attendees will have a thorough understanding of the impact of
sex addiction on couples and therapeutic strategies to work with
the relationship issues that arise whilst ensuring the work won’t
increase the risk of relapse or co-dependency.
Paula Hall is a Relate trained couple counsellor, psychosexual
therapist, young people’s counsellor and family counsellor. She
currently works in private practise and works for the Relate media
team. She is also author of the Relate guides ‘Help Your Children
Cope with Your Divorce’ and ‘How to Have a Healthy Divorce’. She
has a special interest in working with young people and also in
sexual addiction. She provides a sexual addiction treatment group
in Warwickshire as well as working with individuals and couples and
is a founding trustee of ATSAC (Association for the Treatment of
Sexual Addiction & Compulsivity).
Audience
Couple counsellors and psychosexual therapists from Relate and
also in private practise who may be registered with BASRT, BACP and
UKCP. Attendees will need to have attended the one day ‘Recognising
and Understanding Sex Addiction’ CPD day or similar.
