Overview:
This course will aim to widen the style and repertoire of the
counsellor and offer a broader definition of what is “therapeutic“
in counselling . The talking cure may be combined with movement and
other forms of animated practice.
Participants will be encouraged to develop the possibilities of
their personal style as a counsellor. It is not necessary for
participants to have prior training in Systemic approaches or
family therapy, just a willingness to suspend disbelief and allow
exploration and the creation of a safe enough setting to improvise.
The door is open to all.
Objectives:
· To assist participants to explore their style as counsellors
and enhance their repertoire of skills in working with children,
their families and others involved in the counselling context.

· To provide a consideration of a systemic/performative
framework for practice
· To illustrate ways of engaging in systemically informed
methods to enhance engagement and therapeutic opportunities in
child and family interviews
Course structure:
Skills practice , case illustration and practice examples will
be used together with participants openness to explore aspects of
their style they would like to further develop.
Aimed at:
All counsellors in the Children and Young Person’s Service as
well as those interested colleagues in Children’s Services and
Mental Health agencies .
Trainer Biography:
Jim Wilson is a UKCP registered Systemic Psychotherapist and
part-time consultant to Oxleas NHS trust. He also works as
consultant trainer and supervisor to Mental Health and Social Care
organizations in the UK and Europe. His publications include: Child
Focused Practice ; A Collaborative Systemic Approach ( Karnac ,
1998 ) and The Performance of Practice ; Enhancing the Repertoire
of Therapy with Children and Families ( Karnac , 2007 )
