Counselling with a Sexual Focus
Overview:
This course offers counsellors the opportunity to improve their
ability to comfortably discuss sexual issues with their clients,
identifying blocks affecting both themselves and clients and being
aware of when referral is appropriate
Objectives:
By the end of the course students will have:
- shared their concerns about counselling with a sexual
focus
- considered issues which may impact on sexual expression,
and ways this could be approached in counselling
- improved their understanding of what informs people’s
ideas about sex and sexuality
- identified relevant themes couples may want or need to
discuss in counselling
- considered ways to reflexively manage their relationship
with the clients’ material
- considered issues of difference and diversity and their
effect on the sexual conversation
- reacquainted themselves with the rationale for PST
referral and what PST involves
- participated in role play exercises to practise
counselling with a sexual focus
- considered their future learning needs

Counsellors working with couples/young people who have not
recently had any training in working with a sexual focus.
