Overview
This three day course over two blocks ,aims to set the scene for
expanding the repertoire of practice , theoretical considerations
and methods to work with children in a family context .
Objectives
The course will :
- Provide a framework for considering the child –in – context ;
family / school and social network.
- Offer a range of practice methods for engaging children in
family sessions including ; mini-sculpting , interactional
interviewing , engaging the parents co-operation , participatory
and resource oriented interviewing
- An exploration of typical challenges to interviewing children
together with parents/ carers and other adults in their lives ; For
example ;
- the child who wont speak ,
- the adults who constantly complain ,
- the young person who fights back,
- the counsellor who feels overwhelmed!
- Provide opportunities to explore the counsellors “style” in
working with children by expanding the repertoire of practice
.
- Provide practice examples , DVDs of family interviews and case
discussion to broaden experience of family work with children and
young people .
Course structure
The course will aim to address the interests and challenges
brought by participants . In so doing the content may vary in
response to participants main area of interest and development
Reading material , references and handouts will supplement the
taught components. Skills practice consultation and group learning
will be the main modes of teaching and learning during the
course.

colleagues who have NOT undertaken the Relate training provided by
the Centre for Child Mental Health
Trainer
Jim Wilson is a UKCP registered Systemic Psychotherapist and
part-time consultant to Oxleas NHS trust . He also works as
consultant trainer and supervisor to Mental Health and Social Care
organizations in the UK and Europe.
